Motorola Edge 50 Ultra Unboxing and Review

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra Friends, whenever I do the unboxing of Motorola phones, there are always a few people in the comments who say that they have come to promote Motorola phones. In fact, I was doing a podcast on my English channel and people said that this guy Arun always promotes Motorola phones. And to be honest, I don’t feel bad because we do the unboxing of every phone. Yes, I don’t use phones for 6-8 months, but we use them for the first 15-20 days or a month and then we give you our first impressions. And one thing I have noticed consistently is that Motorola phones offer value for money. And that’s why I say whatever I feel. Earlier there were other brands, but now Motorola is doing well and we are calling them out.

Now why am I telling you all this? Edge 50 Ultra is a little different from the earlier phones that were launched. Now its value proposition is also a little different and we are going to talk about that. But we have extensively tested this phone, not just from the hardware side, but mostly from the software side. Especially there are some AI features which I found very interesting & exciting. But let’s talk about that. Let’s quickly open the box. It’s a black box, looks premium & has black text. Interestingly, a note about UV screen protectors. I’m going to tell you about this, I’ll do a shot on it.

Unboxing Experience

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra

But it’s an interesting phone. It doesn’t look very light. Alright, let’s talk about that. Oh! As soon as you open it, you get that beautiful smell & fragrance. And I think it’s a little over-pronounced because I didn’t even remember it. And when I was talking to you, I was wondering from where I was getting such a nice fragrance. Then I found out while unboxing that it’s a fragrance. Anyways, let’s go. So this is a USB Type C to Type C charging cable. You get these stickers, I’m going to tell you why. It’s a USB Type C charger & I’ll tell you what, it’s a 125W charger. I think this is the fastest charging Motorola phone. And what else is there? There’s a case. There’s documentation. It’s a milky hard case, it’s not fully transparent. But it’s a beautiful case. Yeah, that’s all there is. Let’s keep everything aside.

Design and Build Quality

Let me tell you, when you put on UV protectors from the top, sometimes there’s glue & it gets stuck inside. So for that, there are stickers so that whenever you put on UV protectors, you use these stickers. So, it’s the first time I’m seeing something like this. Oh! Look at this! Actually, it’s a wood finish. If you scratch it & smell it, you can smell the wood. I don’t know how long it’ll last but…Motorola has definitely improved the unboxing experience. It’s a small thing but it makes a lot of difference. Especially those who unbox, they love these things. You’re going to enjoy it if you buy a new phone. It comes in 3 colours. This is Nordic wood which is FSC certified. It’s certified for the real wood feel. It’s certified for the real wood feel. It’s also certified for peach fuzz & forest grey.

Alright, this phone is a bit thicker. Generally, all Motorola phones are thin & light. But this is slightly on the thicker side. I won’t say it’s too thick. It’s normal. But Motorola phones are always thin so it’s a bit thick. It’s weight is, I think it’ll be 185g. I think it’s 185g. Let’s see. I was actually going to say 195g. But this is heavy. It’s 196.8g. It’s slightly on the heavier side. If I talk about ports & buttons, there’s a speaker grill, USB Type C, a microphone, a SIM card tray on the left hand side. There’s a metal frame so you can see the antenna lines. There’s a speaker grill on the top, Dolby Atmos text is there. There’s a noise cancelling microphone, a volume rocker, and an on-off button. There’s a microphone below it too. So 1, 2, 3 & 4. There are 4 mics in total. And the camera module is different on other phones. It’s on the top. It’s kind of fused & not that bumpy.

Display

Let’s quickly look at the SIM card tray. But wait for the most important thing. I’ll talk about the hardware quickly. But the software is exciting. There’s a dual nano SIM card slot. Let’s drop it & see. There’s Gorilla Glass Victus protection so it shouldn’t be a problem. Let me tell you again, the drop test we do is a mock test. It’s not a drop test, it’s a mock test. A lot of you like it, so we do it. Let’s start the phone. You can see the side bezels here. The chin is very thin. If I talk about the display, it’s a 6.7” 144Hz fast refresh rate P-OLED display. And it’s LTPS & not LTPO. If it was LTPO, it would’ve been an adaptive refresh rate. But other than that, it’s a bright & beautiful 144Hz display. So there’s absolutely no problem. The screen to body ratio is also great. In fact, the side bezels are literally not there. It’s a 10bit display with HDR10+. And you get multiple SGS certifications for low light etc. So if you use it in low light, you shouldn’t have any problem.

Specifications

Let’s move on to the specifications. It comes with 8S Gen 3 on this processor. And we’ve tested it on multiple phones. It’s around 1.5 million. I won’t say it’s top of the line, but I’ll say it’s a flagship processor. Because if you do gaming, you can do it on the highest settings. There’s no 90FPS mode in BGMI yet. We played Genshin Impact, you get 56-57FPS consistently. It comes with LPDDR5X RAM type, UFS 4.0 storage type. There’s only 1 variant, 12GB RAM & 512GB storage. We’ll talk about why there’s no 8GB variant. Because we specifically asked why there’s no 8GB, 8GB, 250GB variant. Because this phone has a lot of on-device AI features. And it requires more RAM. So your experience shouldn’t be compromised. That’s why there’s only 1 variant, 12GB, 512GB. And surprisingly, despite being a little heavy, it has a 4500mAh battery. And it has a 125W charging. But we tested it & it’s optimised. You can easily use it for a day. It can easily go for a day & it’s done with heavy usage.

You can charge it with a 125W charger. So there’s no issue with that. There’s only 125W wired charging, 50W wireless charging & 10W reverse wireless charging support. But I forgot to tell you one thing & it’s very important. You get a USB 3.1 Gen 2, which means you get 10Gbps speed. There’s a display port too. You can connect a big display from USB Type C to Type C & you’ll be able to use it. Hello UI is available which is based on Android 14. We’ve said in our Motorola videos that Moto’s UI is native Android with some customisations. But according to me, this has gone much beyond native Android. The level of customisations you get is crazy & it’s very clean. You get 3-4 third party apps & 10-12 first party apps. You can uninstall all of them & you can disable the first party apps too. It’s very clean & I’ll tell you what, it’s very optimised. You won’t find any bugs. It’s very fluid. Talking about features, this is a flagship level phone. So all the features that you need in the Hello UI are present in this phone. Moto is unplugged, there’s focus mode, Zen mode, there’s a think shield for your security, Moto is secure to keep your files & folders secure.

AI Features

Basically, it’s geofencing. It checks the location & if it’s not in a known location, it’ll automatically lock. There are many small features. For example, you can double tap to open an app. You can swipe to open dual apps on a split screen. There’s a sidebar for shortcuts too. You can easily access the most frequently used apps. I’ll tell you about the OS first. There are 3 major updates & 4 security updates are promised. We always complain to Motorola people to provide timely updates. And they have promised to provide updates. And they have tried to implement the feedback that we’ve given to Motorola for the past 1-2 years. But yes, there are 3 major updates & 4 security updates. Now let’s talk about the AI features. In fact, let’s do one thing. I’ll show you when we were actually testing it.

The smart current is such that as soon as I switch to the same network & put my phone on, your laptop, tablet & phone switch on together. You just have to switch on the cross control on the same network. You can use your laptop’s mouse & keyboard on your phone too. So if you want to write an email on your phone, you can do it through keyboard & mouse. I think if I’m listening to Spotify on my phone & I put it on the same network, I can bring the same Spotify instance on my laptop. You can also do it on your phone’s virtual instance. You can mirror it & have a new instance as well. If you want to share files, there’s a breeze. You can easily copy files on your laptop & on your phone. If you want to use your phone’s camera as a webcam on your laptop, whether it’s a selfie or a rear camera, you can use both.

You can also do background blur & face tracking. and it’s really nice. I liked this one the most. This personalized wallpaper that you can create with AI. Create with AI. With prompts. Literally. Go to magic canvas and write elephant in a desert with crown. This is how I want the wallpaper. Oh, look at this. I like this wallpaper. Look at this, I need elephant in desert with a crown. Look at this, I created the exact same wallpaper. And if I want it again, I can choose this option. You can add prompts to this if you need hyper realistic wallpaper. Exactly chat GPT or whatever else you want. So really nice implementation. This is going to be very useful and many people will use it.

Connectivity

If I talk about connectivity then the latest & latest Wi-Fi 7 support is there and there There’s Bluetooth 5.4 & all 5G bands are supported globally. The eSIM support is not there. There’s VoNR, 4×4 MIMO connectivity options. There’s NFC but it’ll only work when the device is unlocked. You know NFC payments are on tap & pay now, so it’ll be locked & if you’re paying someone else, then it’s for that. Multimedia is great with P-OLED display & colors. You get an immersive video viewing experience. The display is great & the audio is great too. There’s Dolby Atmos support & it’s loud & quality is good. You can watch HDR videos on YouTube but Netflix is not supported yet. Features like SAR value is within limits, IP68 certification, reverse wireless charging, Moto Gestures support. There are additional functions like volume up & down.

Camera

Specifications There’s a triple camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor. There’s a 50MP ultra wide secondary sensor with a 122 degree FOV. There’s a 64MP 3x optical zoom periscope sensor. All of them are great. There’s a 50MP selfie sensor at the front too. If Motorola has made a major improvement in any area, then it’s the camera. The last Moto X50 Fusion had amazing cameras but this goes a step further. When you click a photo, it may look bad but once it’s processed, it makes a lot of difference. So they’ve worked a lot on post processing. There’s a Pantone partnership for the display & not just for the camera. I’ve taken a lot of photos in different conditions & I’m giving you the G-Drive link.

But I’m really happy with the colors. In fact, we’ve compared it with some other brands phones which are camera centric. And still, I don’t like the photos. They’ve done a great job out of it. The phones we used to say are slightly lower in terms of camera but now they’re slightly above. And again, they use AI a lot. That’s another reason why they’ve done a 12GB variant with the latest RAM type. So that the processing can be fast as there’s a lot of AI processing happening. And it’s not just in still photography, it’s in videography too. Earlier, the spot color was only in still photography but now it’s in videography too. So think about how much processing is required to show just 1 color & do the rest in black & white. It takes a lot of processing & it’s in video too. And obviously, it has OIS & it helps in stabilisation. If you click low light videos or photos, they come out quite good. I mean, the Motorola phones from 6 months ago & even the flagship phones, & if you look at the current phones, the major difference is that the camera is much improved. And if I talk about the features, obviously all the features are there.

But I’d like to talk about 1-2 features. There’s the action shot feature. Basically, it decides according to the conditions & the shutter speed. There are 4 mics, so when you zoom, especially with the 3x optical, you get the audio zoom & it focuses only on the subject. It only takes the sound coming from there & removes the rest. I forgot to tell you, this ultrawide is auto focus. So you can take macro shots & obviously it’s ultrawide. And it’s for video as well as photos. And like we’ve seen in other flagships, you get different focal lengths. Especially for portraits, you can take 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. Especially if you take portraits at 50mm, they really look good. And specifically, I’d like to talk about the focusing. The thing you see in the back between the 2 cameras, that’s laser auto focus. So it locks perfectly when you want to focus on someone. And you can shoot 4K 60fps, in fact you can shoot 4K 30fps HDR videos as well. Back as well as front, not HDR, 4K 30fps. Rest you get time lapse, slow motion, slow motion up to 960fps. And rest all the features like Pro mode, dual capture mode, night vision, panorama, spot colour, long exposure, all of them are available.

So I can definitely say that this is probably one of the best Motorola camera phones. In fact, the Ultra moniker that’s given, it definitely applies to the camera. What do I think about the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra? There’s only 1 variant, 12GB 512GB. And it’s price is around Rs 50-55 when I’m unboxing it. I don’t know if it’s an effective price. It might come under Rs 50 or it’ll be Rs 54,999. But even at Rs 55, I’d say that the software features, the camera quality, performance, display, etc. Yes, you’re getting the 8s Gen 3 at Rs 30-35K. But overall, if I talk about the phone, the Edge 50 Ultra looks really good. Before ending the video, let me tell you that this video is in collaboration with Motorola. But whatever I’ve said in this video, everything I’ve experienced it first hand. No change. We’re thinking of doing a detailed review of all the major phones. So if you have any questions, do ask them in the comments. What do you think about this phone? Do you think it’ll become a popular phone? What do you think? Do let us know.

That’s all for this video, until the next one, Keep Trakin & Stay Safe!
